How to use the Auto Tuner
Setup | Automatic Tuning | Tone | Volume Control
Setup
- Download Auto Tuner
- Open the program (double click 'Syaku8.exe')
- The 'Option' menu should have the following checked:
- 'Sampling: very Fast'
- 'Notation: C D E'
- 'Disp within 10 cent' (a cent in tuning is one hundreth of a half step)
- From the 'Display' menu Choose 'FFT data: 0-5400Hz'
- this selection will let you see your primary note that you are playing (the 'fundamental') and all the other 'notes' that make up the sound of your instrument (overtones)
- if you want to just see what your sound looks like as a vibration choose 'Wave Data: 46ms' (it's more difficult to see your overtones this way)
- From the 'Instrument' menu, Choose your instrument
- Make sure the tuner display is set to A:440
- this setting is just above the large bold numbers at the bottom
- Make sure you have a microphone plugged into your computer and that it is turned on. (It does not need to be heard through the speakers to work for the tuner)
- Just above the fingering display click the [manu/auto] button to select 'auto'. A yellow box will light up next to your selection
- Play a note (Concert Bb is a good note to start with)
- The tuner display will tell you what 'Concert Pitch' note you are playing
- The fingering display will tell you the note you are playing in your instrument's key.
- You will also see a fingering displayed, it may not always agree with fingerings you know, use your fingering chart if you have a question about a fingering)
- When you play a note, the red line in the tuner display should be in the middle.
- The center area will turn blue if you are in tune or close to it
- If the line is to the right, you are playing a little sharp and need to make your instrument a little longer, 'pull out'.
- If the line is to the left, you are playing a little flat and need to make your instrument a little shorter, 'push in'.
- While playing a note, look for the first spike in the graph to be the highest.
- Try to get as many spikes as you can get
- Experiment with changing things like lip pressure, tongue placement, the shape of the inside of your mouth, air consistancy, and the focus of your air and see how it affects your tone
- The top right display just under the large bold numbers (with all the little lines scrolling) is displaying your volume.
- First, keep a note in tune, with a good tone, at a consistant volume
- Try both soft (p) and loud (f) volumes
- Then, keep a note in tune, with good tone, while increasing (cresecendo) and decreasing (decrescendo) your volume
- Try notes from the bottom to the top of your range.
