About George F. Baker High School

George F. Baker High School is a unique high school serving the needs of students from Tuxedo and Greenwood Lake, New York. The administration and faculty take pride in the familial atmosphere of the school and their diverse programs that meet the varied needs of its student body.

Students graduating from our high school must earn a minimum of 22 credits. Included in this course work are four years of English and Social Studies and three years of math and science. Students can also earn credits in foreign language (Spanish and French), art, music, technology, and home economics. Through the Orange/Ulster BOCES our students can receive training in vocational programs including the following which are only a sample of the excellent programs: Automotive Mechanics, Technical Computer/Industrial Electronics, Cosmetology, Culinary Food Trades, Data Processing, Computer Programming, Horticulture/Landscaping, Law Enforcement, and Licensed Practical Nurse.

Despite our size, students may enroll in courses for college credit. Advanced Placement English, Calculus, Biology, Computer Science, U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History, European History, Statistics and Psychology are offered yearly. College credit through the State University at Albany can be earned in both French and Spanish.

Before it became a New York State Mandate, we moved to an all-Regents curriculum, with the most ambitious students being challenged on Honors/AP level courses. Students are encouraged to work up to their potential as we strive to improve student achievement. A full range of support services are provided including Academic Intervention Services (A.I.S.), speech, English as a second language, special education classes and psychological services. There are also two full-time guidance counselors and a part-time school social worker who work closely with students to ensure a successful high school program and appropriate college or work placement.

In addition to our excellent academic offerings, the high school also provides a variety of extracurricular activities and sports. Our music program, both choral and instrumental, is a very important part of our school. Students perform in and around the community as well as on a yearly outing to compete in music festivals.

Our sports program includes soccer, wrestling, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, bowling, skiing, and golf. In addition to these activities, the school also provides a myriad of clubs and activities. Odyssey of the Mind, Spring Musical, Fall Drama, Interact Club, French Club, Spanish Club, Literary Magazine and Visual Arts Society of Tuxedo (VAST) are among the clubs that we offer. We encourage all students to participate in as many activities as possible. Busing is provided after school so that students may attend our extra programs.

The high school is also very proud to sponsor chapters of both the National Junior and Senior Honor Societies which are very active organizations in the school and the community. These groups sponsor Student/Teacher Day, International Day, and the Senior Academic Banquet among other activities.

George F. Baker High School helps students strive for excellence. Students are encouraged to do their best and are recognized and rewarded in a variety of ways for their many accomplishments.
